Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.
Note: As I mentioned in yesterday’s OSN, this will be the last edition of the email and podcast for the foreseeable future, as I’ll be reinvesting the (substantial amount of) time and effort required to produce it each day in other things (including a new, news-related project called “Some Thoughts About”).
If you’re a paying OSN subscriber, the balance of your payment will be refunded, and the OSN archive will be opened up, all paywalls removed.
Thank you so much for supporting this project, and for caring enough to spend some of your time, each day, learning about what’s happening in the world around you.
(And if you want to fill the news-shaped hole in your heart with another pod and/or email, I run a news analysis podcast called Let’s Know Things, and a weekly email of curated links to news-related things called Notes On the News.)
Gay sex ban in Namibia ruled unconstitutional
Summary: A Namibian court has ruled that same-sex acts between consenting men are no longer illegal in the country, and that laws which declared them to be illegal are themselves unconstitutional.
Context: These laws only ever declared same-sex acts between men illegal, not women, and it’s still illegal to marry someone of the same sex in the country, but this is considered to be a big deal because these laws made gay relationships taboo and fueled a lot of discrimination toward anyone who was, or seemed to be, gay-a social stance that also made it more difficult to provide health services, like HIV vaccines and treatments, to folks in a region in which infection rates are very high.

On day of fatal BP refinery blast, 3,712 safety alarms and one unsent email (www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/on-day-of-fatal-bp-refinery-blast-3-712-safety-alarms-and-one-unsent-email-1ad00a4d)
Summary: An explosion at a BP oil refinery in Ohio in 2022 was preceded by thousands of safety alarms and a breakdown in communication between daytime and evening shift workers, according to a new report from federal investigators who spent two years looking into the blast, which killed two refinery workers.
Context: Among other things, the report indicates that BP neglected to shut down production at the refinery when warning signs indicated they should, and they didn’t fix obvious issues with equipment, despite having been told over and over about these issues by employees, and these issues eventually culminated with a series of malfunctions, 3,712 alarms in a 12-hour period, and an explosion that led to even more warnings, confusion, and delayed responses; the refinery has since been sold to a Canadian company, which says it restarted production at the facility last year, and that it’s working with regulators to make improvements and upgrade safety measures.

Indonesia is trying to block LGBTQIA content from the internet
Summary: A new Indonesian bill, which is based on an earlier proposed bill that was shelved following widespread public backlash, would restrict content in the country that portrays “LGBTQIA behavior,” and anything that shows lifestyles or actions that might be imitated by the public, allowing the government to shut down or censor social platforms, TV networks, and other broadcast mediums, alongside the people using them to share content, using fines and license cancellations; the bill also places limits on investigative journalism in the country.
Context: That earlier, shelved bill would have forced LGBTQIA Indonesian people into conversion therapy programs, and this new one approaches the same topic from a different angle, its terms vague enough that it would apparently-according to criticisms from legal experts and opponents in the country-allow the government to shut down and silence any publication, journalist, influencer, or network it doesn’t like, which would extend its existing censorship powers, which it justifies by claiming it needs to tackle so-called fake news; international human rights groups have noted a significant rightward-shift in Indonesia’s government in recent years, and this new proposed bill is likely to be passed before the current president leaves office later this year.

Part of what’s informing the rate of electrification (and the deployment of renewable energy sources) in various countries is the cost of electricity versus competitive fuel types (like gas); in China, electricity is cheaper than gas, which makes deploying more clean sources of electricity an easier bet, though they’re also at that point, in part, because of previous investments in the same (at a time in which other sources were more competitive).

    The system has to crash. Do you believe in mathematics? I'm not talking Terence Howard math. If you believe math to be the one constant in the perceived reality of humanity, then the current circumstances cannot be changed by voting. If you multiply a positive and a negative, what do you always get? You can multiply 1 trillion by negative 2 and what do you get? You just turned your positive trillion into negative 2 trillion. My point is this ...there is no lesser of two evils. Evil is evil. Corruption is like cancer and we are basically terminal right now. Jefferson said this form of government needed revolution every 20 years to persist. Franklin said they'd given the country a republic if they could keep it. That's gone. Nobody represents the people in DC. We can't even figure out how to use a bathroom. The people are stupid. There's nothing more dangerous than a stupid person. When I find myself in rooms where these topics arise, I sit back and watch. Typically, there are one or two people on a similar trajectory.stupid people will not go of their stupid ideas. We shouldn't be involved in war. There is enough for everybody to have all of their wants and needs. Homelessness, hunger, disease, crime, mental illness, and greed should have no place in our world. We are not anymore advanced than we were in the dark ages. In fact, we are probably more similar to a feudal system than a republic. We also never were a democracy. Democracy is probably one the most idiotic concepts known to man. I know a handful of people who I would consider worthy of voting and all of them understand it's an exercise in futility. We don't need this bloated pig of a government. What's government ever don't make life better? Not a single thing. You do come at this with rationale and noble intentions. You're close and you are the people we need to steer these conversations. You are going to get there soon.

    It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461

    Society is polarized, because people are convinced, rightly or not, but they are convinced, that this trial, like all the others, especially the ones coming from deep blue new york, are a political hitjob on one's political enemies. It's perhaps designed to convince those, who, like you, who will follow this trial looking for any justification whatsoever, to at least make it look more legitimate, than it is, while at the same time, completely ignoring the equally as damaging trials agains biden's son. I know this is emotional. It's emotional for both sides, hence the polarization of society. So pls just take this as a considered opinion, and avoid the violetnst.

    Equality is hardest. So is to understand & believe that there’s no one rule for all that suits our needs the best. The animal world is more equal rather than us humans. The impact of a slow life, stillness in our daily life is so highly underrated. Yet those are the most significant moments that might create a spark in our thoughts, or show us the path unknowingly, or just relax our brain appropriately.

  • @romideyy

    It's interesting to see how human brain & mind follows others, set them as a norm in their own heads & fear to act otherwise, most of the time. In a world of "No one rule fits all", we human forgot the essence of liberation & how we ourselves could choose and be unhappy in most context. It's often funny how an invisible societal format regulates our behavior, impacts the mind.

    Wow. Can't express how this one hour seven minutes got me thinking. Specially the question at the end. I wish we gain the maturity and freedom to explore the value a certain type of prop/ sex doll could bring in our life too. It might actually help the section of people to curb the urge and might aid in giving the medical and psychology specialists a way to find a tool that could help them. A wilful participation in such research could be a welcome step (in a confined and well observed ambience). At the same time, this gets me thinking, there is a segment of people in our society who likes different types of pleasure, which might or might not include legal restrictions globally for various ethical and safety reasons. Is it time we think of an ethical legal practice and body of judiciary that's more humane? Is it time we unlearn the current justice and laws and learn, relearn a newer version that allows human seek pleasure ethically and morally? Consent is king, so is the freedom to live life just how someone wants. Only if a quantitative value didn't rule what's right and wrong for any particular society/ country, maybe we all could be happier (able to be and do just what we are). What if we eliminated right & wrong completely from society & focused more on the real value of living on our own terms (ethically, morally and without harming anyone)? Maybe the world needs to reset just so that human and animals could live a more purposeful life? Just like new words gets added in a dictionary always, a few words needs to go away/ be redefined - right, wrong, stigma, taboo, and maybe judgement?

  • @romideyy
    @romideyy 7 місяців тому

    At times I have felt this strongly - we, human very easily tag a word with negativity or positivity & then our mind sticks to that definition & feeling around that strong definition. What if being selfish could be the best thing we could do for ourselves and our near ones? Only when I've chosen and decided to take care of myself, is when I have consciously or sub consciously chosen to free up the time for my family & friends to be worrying about me. If we are selfish enough to take care of ourselves, know exactly who we are and what do we want, maybe a lot of blaming, pointing fingers at each other and focusing on only things like "i have done this for you, you haven't done it for me" kind of things might reduce. We might be more self reliant, absorbed, content, careful and free that we'd be able to take the appropriate life decisions for ourselves taking onus of it. I wish we could not get restricted in a definition only & let our mind go beyond the definition at times just so we can bloom with our whole brain and heart.

    Now that I’ve been thinking about it, what if I set a different goal for each travel & push myself to the extreme to see how much of my oneself am I willing to go in order to meet that goal? Am I matured enough to go with the flow that travel brings us most of the time? Am I hesitant enough to not let my plans change a bit… I guess travel could be just another social tool to experiment more on myself and who I am. Although that’s not a definitive answer we look for, trying to know who we are is vaster than trying to know who someone else is. Just another perspective to see travel as a mindset or a social tool that’s powerful enough to change the world for good? This makes me think - do we get too restricted to any definitions in life? Or do we let our life flow irrespective of a defined definition to any word? What could be the pro and cons?

  • @romideyy
    @romideyy 8 місяців тому

    Travelling is a mindset I only feel. Although if I wish to at all define travel in those other probable or possible contexts that we keep hearing otherwise, let’s take a pause and ask a few what’s ifs: 1. What if I’m trying to run away from something & ending up travelling. Is it harming me or anyone else in the process? It might not help me find a contextual solution but it might be the moment I needed for my own sanity of mind, clarity of thoughts or just escaping. What if travel could allow me just a few days of the most therapeutic escape I could seek for? 2. What if travel could be the tool to us that’d help us benefit from the multifaceted situations life could create for me? 3. What if travel does nothing extra to me but just follow a ritual of going out with my family or etc. sorry then I’m getting something extra from travel. 4. What if I said I have loved travelling inside my mind too/ inside my thoughts/ where my mind travels everywhere & knows no restrictions to anything else. 5. What if travel never exist for me. What if my definition to travel change as a human over the time period, as we grow? #justathought #whatifs #ifsandbuts
